Bad Hear Day

September 4

“And every one that heareth these sayings of MINE, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:"  Matthew 7:26

"From the outside, there are notable similarities:"

There is a second group the LORD addresses during HIS conclusion to the Sermon on the Mount.  Apart from the talkers HE confronts in 7:21-22 is a close kin who "heareth" a lot about CHRIST, but tragically refuse to "doeth" what HE says.  Both are equally damning, and though the 'sayers' would appear a religious leg up on the 'hearers'; a one legged sinner will never leap the chasm of sin, from Hell to Heaven.  To illustrate the consequences of a 'bad hear day', JESUS employs a powerful side by side comparison.  The LORD masterfully reveals the difference between a house (life) that ultimately stands and one which falls.  From the outside, there are notable similarities: both heard the gospel; both built houses (lives); both built in the same locale; and both experienced the same storm.  The analogy however, begins to break down from here as the LORD uncovers the secret of the wise man, and the downfall of the foolish man.  The "wise man" built his house (life) upon the rock solid "sayings" of JESUS CHRIST; and there he found a substratum for his soul.  The "foolish man" though, bought his swamp land from the False Prophet Land and Development Co., and dug only as far as the shifting sands of human doctrine and opinion.  The first was meticulous about the "doeth" of GOD'S blueprint for saving faith (cf. Acts 16:31).  The second compromised at the most critical juncture of the entire building process; and thus sealed his eternity to the pending, yet imminent, flood of GOD'S wrath against sin.  The LORD is unequivocal as HE brings this greatest sermon ever preached to a climax for decision.  Only those who have heard the gospel and responded in the grace of humble repentance will live through the deluge of judgment sure to come.  At the end of man's day, GOD'S way will prevail.  Every cult will come crashing down, every false prophet will fall, and every 'ism' of dead religion will turn out to be a 'wasm'.

These engraved words from the cathedral of Lubeck, Germany pointedly reflect our LORD'S closing caveat:

  • "Thus speaketh CHRIST our LORD to us:

  • You call ME MASTER and obey ME not

  • You call ME light and see ME not

  • You call ME the way and walk ME not

  • You call ME life and live ME not

  • You call ME wise and follow ME not

  • You call ME fair and love ME not

  • You call ME rich and ask ME not

  • You call ME eternal and seek ME not

  • ... if I condemn thee blame ME not"

"And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it."

"Let us turn to the language of the bible; it furnishes the only vehicle to express the thoughts which overwhelm us, and we break out involuntarily in the language of GOD'S own inspiration:"
