The Spirit of Competition

September 26

“I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not."  3 John 9

"... our credibility and fruitfulness follow our humility down the proverbial drain."

What began so good, so long ago, on that first post resurrection Pentecost, has turned  to a fractured mess of doctrine and distinctive.  "And HE is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things HE might have the preeminence."   We state that competing interests hold no place in the Church, but the spirit of competition we hold would be unbelievable, were it not so incredible.  On the corporate level, whole denominations which once turned the world upside down out on the gospel circuit, have now aimed their guns within; and instead, are turning the Church inside out.  What an embarrassing swill of pomposity we are come to, as our credibility and fruitfulness follow our humility down the proverbial drain.

"My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation."  At the leadership level, how manifold are the prophets of today, who are intent on getting along with no one, save the one they shave each morning.  This sort of Blue-Ribbon bullheadedness looks good in suspenders; but does great harm to the body it adorns.  What we lack in charity, we make up for in pride; and indeed, this acidic arrogance is serving Satan's purpose, corroding the sweet unity CHRIST died to bring to HIS Body of believers.  With all this to our deficit, the woes turn double-barreled over the indiscretion of indulging a lost crowd of scoffers, who protest to vote, but are not citizens of HIS kingdom.  "For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?"  The divisive spirit in the Church is blamed widely on the Devil; but most of it is homegrown, and worse yet, even cultivated.  We have proven pride to be an extremely effective fertilizer ... and if you're humble enough to move downwind, you'll find it even smells like the real deal.

"Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly ..."  Knowing when and where to cast out the infidels causing trouble in the Church is not learned in Bible college; this discernment must come from the HOLY SPIRIT.  "A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject; knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself."  Having the strength and good courage to follow through is a decision to hold JESUS and the welfare of his flock in higher esteem than any man, including yourself.

"... walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavouring to keep the unity of the SPIRIT in the bond of peace."

For Love of Country
 William Prescott  (1726-1795)
(American Colonel during the Revolutionary War)
"We consider that we are all embarked in (the same boat) and must sink or swim together ... Let us all be of one heart, and stand fast in the liberty wherewith CHRIST has made us free.
And may HE, of HIS infinite mercy, grant us deliverance of all our troubles."
