Death's Divine Duty

September 11

“Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men ..."   Luke 13:4

"... the death of sin is inevitable ... the destruction of the sinner is optional."

The context of the beginning verses of Luke 13 is death and suffering; and the ever present assumption that it is somehow unjust.  Conventional thought suggests that GOD is in the business of punishing the upper classmen of sin; while excusing those who are unlearned in this art, or merely incidental in its practice.  The truth is that GOD hates all sin, little ones, big ones, and in-between ones.  HE is: "angry with the wicked every day".  The fact that sin has consequences is indisputable, with the Blue Ribbons fashioned out of granite and adorned with flowers dotting the hills of our landscape.  Injustice however, is a perceived notion contrived out of a heart of pride, and holds no attachment to Biblical reality.  Injustice is a gross misnomer, and of no kin to mercy whatsoever!  Only the foolhardy fall on their faces to beg the ONE WHO knows their every sin, for justice ... or fairness.  "It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because HIS compassions fail not."  The old cliché that 'life just isn't fair' is a very accurate statement; and praise the LORD that life isn't, for if it were, you or I would not be here to begrudge its absence.

"Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:"  Man's common denominator is the death sin brings; and nothing else unifies us quite like it!  It is said to come when we least expect it, but that is an ignorance of our own choosing.  "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:"  Death is a divine duty, an appointment that knows no schedule conflicts, and will be kept to the very second.  With tongue-in-cheek, some have even quipped that if they only knew the venue of their sure and pending death, they would simply avoid it.  The man or woman though, who has faced the mirror of HIS Word and viewed the reflection of their own vileness, finalizes his\her funeral plans fast.  You begin to expect death at any moment, and were GOD'S mercy withdrawn a fraction of the same, every casket would instantly close upon man and his insolent pride.

"I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish."  JESUS told the 'fair life' protesters of HIS day that every breath they took was of HIS grace; affording them an opportunity to repent before HE granted their appeal to justice.  Because we are Adam's ancestors the death of sin is inevitable; because of CHRIST and HIS cross the destruction of the sinner is optional.

"The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death."

"Our enemies have made the mistake that America’s enemies always make. They saw liberty and thought they saw weakness. And now, they see defeat."
