Penury's Persuasion

October 26

"In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury."  Proverbs 14:23

"Our sin nature tends toward the slothful and the 'something for nothing' paradigm ..."

It wasn't us who put the laborious into labor; but rather the hand of our progenitors, which forced HIM through their disobedience.  "And the LORD GOD took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it."  Labor predates our fall, and was originally delegated of GOD to Adam, as a perpetual trust to care for HIS creation.  From our inception, the LORD knew of the pitfalls of idleness, and thus HE put a mechanism in place called work.  The curse of sin may have introduced toil, but the curse was not to be the cause of indolence.  Its intent of GOD, was rather to be a reminder of what was forfeited at Eden (cf. Genesis 3:17-19).

"For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat."  Our sin nature tends toward the slothful and the 'something for nothing' paradigm; helping to explain the long lines (and often the same crowd) at both the local welfare office, and the lottery counter at the neighborhood C-Store.  "He that laboureth laboureth for himself; for his mouth craveth it of him."  Though deemed cruel by some with tender hearts, and a tender cranium to match, hunger pangs, according to the Scripture, will turn out to be a motivation unto labor, which knows no equal to success.  "penury" ...you see, is the fuse of the LORD to light your fire, and thus persuade you to get off your lazy derrière, and embrace the thorns of toil.  To be idle today though, is become the ideal across a wide swath of our culture, indulged more and more, and increasingly subsidized by imperceptive government at all levels.  "For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.  Now them that are such we command and exhort by our LORD JESUS CHRIST, that with quietness they work ..."  The Church, however, is to be the consummate counterculture in all matters.  When it comes to the issue of industry, it is the LORD'S will that we keep our mouths shut and go to work.  Each son or daughter bearing the family name: Christian, must endeavor to be the best HE can be ... in you!

"Hereby perceive we the love of GOD, because HE laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.  But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of GOD in him?"  In those times, and rare instances, when one or more of our eternal family are legitimately unable or incapacitated, it is the church, not the world, which is to be our safety net.  The mark of the believer in right standing with the BOSS is that he is:

"Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord ..."

For Love of Country
Benjamin Franklin Morris  (1810-1867)
(American historian)
"This is a Christian nation, first in name, and secondly because of the many and mighty elements of a pure Christianity which have given it character and shaped its destiny from the beginning ... The chief security and glory of the United States of America has been, is now, and will be forever, the prevalence and domination of the Christian Faith."
