Easier Said Than Done

October 23

“... If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body."  James 3:2

"Indeed, what muscle that soft tissue between our teeth flexes!"

There are certain things we may send on before us into glory, but unfortunately, our tongue is not one of them.  "... that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man."  Would it not be of immeasurable benefit to have that loose thing behind our lips cut out, sent up to be tuned, and then reinstalled to speak only when spoken to ... by GOD?  "But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart ..."  In a roundabout way, this has occurred, if you are saved.  At the moment of spiritual conception, our heart was not merely remodeled, but made anew.  That old warehouse of wickedness, which daily barfed up its contents through that hole just below our nose, was razed to make room for the Temple of the HOLY SPIRIT.  "A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you:"  Sadly though, in spite of this miraculous transplant of grace, our tongues continue to be our regular undoing; and frequently, the voice of the underworld.  Even the mute are not immune, for HIS ear is attentive, not to our mouth, but to our heart; and mark it down, HIS hand on that pulse to see if we are free of all guile.  "Therewith bless we GOD, even the FATHER; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of GOD.  Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing."  Indeed, what muscle that soft tissue between our teeth flexes! Don't be deceived by its appearance ... it may look flabby, but it is the most brawny, and exercised portion of our anatomy for the cause of Satan.  To that, James would exclaim: "My brethren, these things ought not so to be."

There, just in front of you, on the instrument panel of your religion, says the LORD, is the gauge of your tongue.  "If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain."  It is out front, demanding the lead, steering the entire life, and truly indicative of where you are headed.  "Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile."  Easier said than done ... comes to mind when we read this verse.  "But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison."  No, if this toothy tiger is to be tamed, it will take the ONE who abides in your heart to do it.  "Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips."  Nothing short of DIVINE GPS (GOD'S Preventative SPIRIT), is up to this most urgent and ongoing task in each of us.

"He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction."

"The Christian faith and the Holy Scriptures arm us with the means of neutralizing and repelling the assaults of evil in and from ourselves.  Mist may rest upon the surrounding landscape, but our own path is visible from hour to hour, from day to day."
