Go On and Stand For It

October 12

“Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither."  1 Samuel 16:11

"... the modus-operandi of the ALMIGHTY is perpetually unconventional"

What intolerable state has the LORD brought you to in life?  What is it in your home, marriage, family, or pursuits, that has you at your wits end, and steals your sleep?  'Well, you know, we can't change that ... or that's just the way things are.'  Dear child of creation, you might just be surprised what your CREATOR is willing to move on your behalf, once your desire and indignation align with HIS.  Is there any horizon of HIS will to which you have raised your focus?  If all is as well as it eternally can be with you, perhaps a quick check of the pulse is in order.

“Send and fetch him:"  Such was the state Israel had come to, as Samuel sought out GOD'S choice for king to replace that insufferable Saul.  'Oh, but the LORD cannot use me to turn things around, I am small and little known.'  Think about it, if not for GOD'S choosing, who would have ever heard of the likes of: Abraham, Moses, Gideon, Deborah, Mordecai, Esther, Paul, Lydia, Timothy, or Priscilla?  And had HE not dispatched Samuel to retrieve this ruddy lil' shepherd, how would've the name of David ever become so household in Biblical lore?  Refuse to buy into your own excuses; the view of GOD is always overhead; and the modus-operandi of the ALMIGHTY is perpetually unconventional, and by design, counterintuitive (cf. Isaiah 55:8-9).  We have, in but a few short years, systematically excused away the very power and presence of the GOD of Heaven; WHOSE call our forefathers answered when they left tyranny to come to these shores.  "... the land of the free, and the home of the brave", still stirs our emotions; but almost everything which those before us fought and died for, is on its last swirl in the bowl of our decadence.

"... we will not sit down till he come hither."  Where is the sanctified urgency among GOD'S people today?  Across our land, many are the voices who say they can't stand the dearth of righteousness to which we have come; but few there be, who, like Samuel, refuse to sit until it be remedied.  To our corporate chagrin: 'Standing on the Promises', has been replaced with 'Sitting on the Premises', in the modern hymnal of the redeemed.

"For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter."

For Love of Country
Abraham Lincoln  (1809-1865)
(16th President of the United States)
"The Declaration of Independence which gave liberty not alone to the people of this country, but hope to all the world, for all future time.  It was that which gave promise that in our time the weights would be lifted from the shoulders of all men, and that all should have an equal chance.  This is the sentiment embodied in the Declaration of Independence ... I would rather be assassinated on this spot than surrender it."

(Independence Hall in Philadelphia, February 23, 1861)
