Pea Patch Full of Philistines

November 7

“Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite ... stood in the midst of the ground, and defended it, and slew the Philistines: and the LORD wrought a great victory."  2 Samuel 23:11-12

"Consider these classic underdogs from the Scripture ..."

It was just a pea patch full of Philistines; but to Shammah, it was his Waterloo, wrought of GOD, to win or loose.  "And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a piece of ground full of lentiles:"  Where has the LORD backed you up knee deep in lentiles, and bid you to stand?  Mark the place, for if you don't stand now, the hounds of Heaven will circle you back around to the same piece of ground until it be won.  The battle which is Christian, is no different tactically than the great ones we read of historically.  Only the General named Fool, would continue to press the advance while leaving his enemy intact at his rear.  Many believers however, are convinced that the best strategy is escape and evade.  Yet perhaps worse are those who flank their foe and refuse to engage, only to expose their entire command and quartermaster to defeat, while cutting their own supply lines, only to famish out on the field of battle.  Victory is not all that complicated to those who understand they are: "more than conquerors through HIM that loved us".  Truth is, every man is a born coward, till there be a cause (cf. 1 Samuel 17:29).  Men don't fight and die for flags, but for what they believe in, and what their banner represents, be it right or wrong.  Once, as Christians, the cause of HIS cross becomes dear to us, the gates of hell will quake, says JESUS, at the spiritual offensive mounted by the hosts of the LORD.

Consider these classic underdogs from the Scripture as proof that it is not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog:

  • David versus Goliath's Philistines

  • Gideon versus Midian's multitudes

  • Joshua versus Jericho

  • Samson versus Delilah's countrymen

  • Three Hebrew teens versus the world superpower

  • Peter versus the Roman garrison at Gethsemane

  • Paul versus the entire world politic

  • JESUS versus all of hell on HIS way to Calvary

  • Twelve Disciples versus a decidedly hostile world to the gospel

Again, what pea patch has the COMMANDER of the LORD'S Army posted you in and bid you to hold at all costs?  It may not seem significant to you, but if you'll hold fast in courage, the eternal annals of history will bear out, that you, like Shammah, won a strategic victory one day.  "Occupy till I come" ... were our LORD'S parting words to HIS followers, and rest assured, HE will give the ground if you will stand, and then pray to hold it.  HE longs for the glory of the long shot!

"Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:"
