The Glaze of Grace

November 5

“Then I went down to the potter's house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels."  Jeremiah 18:3

"The process can be arduous as HIS sensitive fingers detect the defects of our fallen consistency ...

If it were possible, and were you inclined to peek in on GOD, this is what you would see.  "And the vessel that HE made of clay was marred in the hand of the POTTER: so HE made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the POTTER to make it."  Herein is the business with which HE occupies HIMSELF; yes, vessel after vessel, HE is busy fixing what went broke about us way back in our garden of sin.  Around the clock, 24\7, GOD'S pottery shop runs the wheels of reclamation and redemption as fast as HIS SPIRIT can break us down and set us up.  "THINE hands have made me and fashioned me together round about; yet THOU dost destroy me."  Regardless of the egocentric and arrogant notions we may hold, no one fully understands what the POTTER has envisioned for the vessel HE will ultimately make of us.  Ours is simply to yield to the pressure of HIS hands as the wheel of our life spins us into shape.  The process can be arduous as HIS sensitive fingers detect the defects of our fallen consistency, while over and over again, the flaws of sin are removed, and the clay is once more thrown onto the wheel to begin anew.  "But now, O LORD, THOU art our FATHER; we are the clay, and THOU our potter; and we all are the work of THY hand."  Finally, our lives shape up, and we begin to see what HE is after; only now to find the sharp tools of HIS design, pressed against us in the agonizing detail work.  We object, but to no avail as the wheel slows, and the knife cuts away fine slivers of our lives to fashion us into one of HIS innumerable, and yet unique vessels.

"Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against GOD? Shall the thing formed say to HIM that formed it, Why hast THOU made me thus?  Hath not the POTTER power over the clay ...?"  Now it slows to a stop, and those gentle hands of love follow HIS eyes, to sculpt the final touches on the masterpiece which you have become.  But wait, is that the fire?  YES! ... with heat beyond comprehension, a consuming fire, to forever glaze in a grace so wondrous, that the world looks on like Nebuchadnezzar, and marvels that there is a FOURTH in the fire with you.

"... cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in MINE hand"

"Southern culture has fostered a type of imagination that has been influenced by Christianity of a not too unorthodox kind and by a strong devotion to the Bible, which has kept our minds attached to the concrete and the living symbol."
