Lasting Impressions

November 30

“The word which came unto Jeremiah from the LORD … Go unto the house of the Rechabites …”  Jeremiah 35:2

“… many believers, neither possess, nor desire, the spiritual maturity to go about HIS business with excellence.”

Who is it that the LORD could hold you before as an example?  In reality, all of us are; the only question is: are we good examples, or bad ones?  GOD, in wishing to illustrate HIS approval, or the antithesis, enlists a host of object lessons throughout both Testaments.  Whether famous or infamous; beasts, persons, places, and things, are forever chronicled as lasting impressions of what, or what not, to be, or do.  A few of each include:

  • Abraham securing a lasting heritage: “Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation … for I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and shall keep the way of the LORD to do justice and judgment …”

  •  David’s pursuit of the heart of GOD: “I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after MINE OWN heart …”

  • Job’s exemplary lifestyle: “And the lord SAID UNTO Satan, hast thou considered MY servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and upright man, one that feareth GOD, and escheweth evil?”

  •  Dumb and stubborn creatures: “Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle …”

  • Wise and industrious insects: “Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:”

  • Troublemakers in the Church: “… some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck: Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.”

  • Societal unrighteousness: “And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly”

  •  The proud and power brokers: “I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preemininence among them, receiveth us not.”

  • The honest and humble: “Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself …”

Sadly, many believers, neither possess, nor desire, the spiritual maturity to go about HIS business with excellence.  The ‘good enough for who it is for’ mentality of the world is present in the Church; but is woefully inadequate to any eternal enterprise … and to the Christian, there are no enterprises outside of that realm.  JESUS would, that the worldlings around us might say: ‘go unto the house of the Christians’, to learn of temperance and righteousness; but can HE? … with a straight face?  Do we, like HIS disciples, suggest by our actions, that HE send the masses of needy people away, so that we can focus on: we, ours, and mine.

“… be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”

"We account the Scriptures of GOD to be the most sublime philosophy.  I find more sure marks of authenticity in the Bible than in any profane history whatsoever ... GOD for HIS benefaction in creating all things, and the LAMB, for HIS benefaction in redeeming us with HIS blood."
