“Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a drought.”  Luke 5:4

“… we have lost touch with the bottom, and are in a place where we must trust to the TOP!”

Wading around in the spiritual shallows is refreshing when we are young in CHRIST.  Here, it is warm, safe, and pleasant … the place where HE acclimates us to our new life of faith.  All about us are the other babes of new birth splashing in the water, as clueless as we are to the deep HE intends to draw us out to.  “… he brought me through the waters; the waters were to the ankles.  Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through the waters; the waters were to the knees.  Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through; the waters were to the loins.  Afterward he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not pass over; for the waters were risen, waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed over.”  Little by little, the compulsory swimming lessons of the saved take place.  Day by day, we attend to the trade of shipbuilding; and the seminars of the HOLY SPIRIT, designed to make us fishers of men.   “Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by MY NAME; thou art MINE.  When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee …”   Ever so gradually, HE coaxes us further from the beaches of our comfort zone, compelling all the while to rely solely on HIM.  Soon, the lights of the shore grow dim and distant; we have lost touch with the bottom, and are in a place where we must trust to the TOP!  HE has us out of sight with the familiar now, and in every direction is the endless horizon of the deep.  The choices out here are only two: fish or flounder.

“And he said unto me … hast thou seen this?  Then he brought me, and caused me to return to the brink of the river.”  The obvious answer to this rhetorical is: yes, I have seen the overwhelming flood of HIS will.  Having been enlisted and trained, ours is to go, patrol the deep on constant alert, for HE has made us ”fishers of men” … in search of the shipwrecked in sin.  Insisting to remain in the boat, or on the beach, during this critical phase of water training, will beget a life which drowns; when once it is launched out into the deep demands of this dutiful faith.  “Launch out …”, says the LORD, to sane in the surf is insane, when the situation of humanity is so desperate just out there.

“JESUS saith unto them, children, have ye any meat?  They answered HIM, no.  And HE said unto them, cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find.  They cast therefore …”   GOD has wired the console of every soul HE redeems to be a fish finder.  The net profit of a good fisherman is not how many nets he possesses, but how many he’ll cast.

“And HE saith unto them, follow ME and I will make you fishers of men.”
