Fast or Famine

May 27

"Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants ... and cry unto the LORD"  Joel 1:14

"The 'Form of Godliness Tour' draws great swells from city to city ..."

Joel is as much a manual on the steps of a desperate Christian, as it is a prophecy.  The context surrounding the book bearing his name is utter desolation; a veritable moonscape in the wake of GOD'S wrath.  "Then shall they know that I am the LORD, when I have laid the land most desolate because of all their abominations which they have committed."  That men would sin is no surprise, nor is it a wonder that GOD would judge sin by sending trial, hardship, anguish, and even death.  What does beg to be asked though, is: 'Why do we wait so long to turn back to GOD?'  What amazing resilience we display against pain when it is tethered to the roots of our contempt.

"Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the LORD."  The Church age, in which we dwell, has become conference crazed, retreating to our retreats, with the enemy in hot pursuit, if not in affinity.  "And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as MY people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness."  The 'Form of Godliness Tour' draws great swells from city to city; and all the while, the power of GOD is on a Sabbatical (cf. 2 Timothy 3:5).  Preaching and sound doctrine are playing second fiddle to everything from rock concerts, to what best resembles cub scout meetings.  "And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not."  What does remain of the vestige of GOD'S greatness in the American Church is indulged and formal, retreats for the ritualistic.  That men become indifferent and complacent is no surprise, nor is it a wonder that GOD would send preachers to warn of pending judgment.  What does beg to be asked though, is: 'Why do we confer over sin and retreat to dark caves of terrestrial thought?'

Is the tide of HIS wrath rolling ashore in this 'One Nation Under GOD'?  We are indeed at the crossroad of fast or famine!

"And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them."

"True Godliness doesn't turn men out of the World, but enables them to live better in it, and excites their endeavors to mend it."
