"Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding."   Proverbs 23:23

"… a romance explicable only by the cross of CHRIST!"

The word "truth" is found 235 times in the Bible; and interesting is this topic’s parity in the Testaments, 118 in the OT, and 117 in the NT.  Three times GOD is referred to as the “GOD of truth”, making verity as ageless as HE is.  "HE is the Rock, HIS work is perfect: for all HIS ways are judgment: a GOD of truth and without iniquity, just and right is HE" … it is also easy to surmise that truth defined of GOD is: solid, perfect, absent of sin, just or innately fair, and right, never wrong.  This in contrast to man’s reckoning of truth which is: jelled, good enough, relative, biased, and right only by accident.  To man, truth is elusive, fluid, undesirable, and perishable (cf. John 18:38; Romans 1:25; Isaiah 59:14).  Truth be known, GOD’S truth is far too lofty for us; which explains why words like: “mercy, grace, and peace” are often yoked with truth in the Scripture … “Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.”  … a romance explicable only by the cross of CHRIST!

Proverbs 23:23 reveal for us three important principles regarding DIVINE truth:

1} Truth is Market Driven … “Buy the truth”  JESUS stated that once one laid eyes on the truth, he would gladly give all to attain it (cf. Matthew 13:44-46).  Solomon is not suggesting however, that truth is some Blue Light Special available at select stores for a limited time only.  Nor is he saying that truth is available to only those with resource (cf. Isaiah 55:1; Psalm 49:6-8).  Biblically, truth is not a financial matter at all, but rather, a moral one; being purchased with conviction and repentance.  “Buy”  here is in the sense of: ‘I’ll buy that …’ or ‘Buy into that …’ or as some have told themselves regarding the truth of the Gospel: ‘I don’t buy it’.  How tragic to think that you’ll stand one day before the PURVEYOR of Grace at the Great White Throne service counter, in the futile effort to return that decision.

2} Truth is Most Valuable … “and sell it not”  In the world, every man has his price, but not so when the truth is genuinely yours.  You must pass by the Trading Post of this world, and its wares of fame & fortune, when it stands between you and truth. (cf. Matthew 4:8-10; 16:26; Hebrews 11:26) and besides …only a fool trades a Ferrari for a Ford!  Once you have the truth, all the vanity of Madison Avenue and Wall Street lose their luster.

3} Truth holds Multiple Rewards … “also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.”  Truth is not only the best investment when it comes to eternity, but it begins paying rich dividends here and now.  Buy one, get one free deals are commonplace, however buy one, get three free are virtually unheard of.  The TRUTH and HIS by-products are yours for the asking … the price is: error, foolishness, pride, & ignorance.

"And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free ... If the SON therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed."
