Spoiled or Saintly

March 13

"And having spoiled principalities and powers, HE made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it."  Colossians 2:15

"... the gibbet of man had turned to the glory of GOD!"

Below deck, "principalities" were plotting HIS destruction; topside, "powers", under principal influence, were parting HIS garments.  Above it all, the SON of GOD hung, "triumphing over them in it" ... a tactical move that makes even Troy appear blundered.  A cross-less CHRIST is no CHRIST, thus the "it" is the cross, "... it shall bruise thy head,"  (cf. Genesis 3:15).  At Calvary, the gibbet of man had turned to the glory of GOD!

The strategy is without precedent, straight out of the war room of Melchisedec.  "... that through death HE might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;"  Life's greatest enemy is not the devil, but death, and in the midst of its apparent victory, CHRIST  "spoiled ... openly" the foes who held it.  Out of the inky and silent, yet decisive Battle of Golgotha, the SON would rise on a world of sinners no longer at the mercy of death.  "I am HE that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death."  Thus the redeemed in new birth can legitimately demand: "... O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?"

My studies suggest the imagery of our main text as that of a Roman general returning in pomp and ceremony, having "spoiled" his enemy.  All would attend, victors by choice; the defeated under duress, with the most distinguishable factor being their attire.  Paul's only other use of [apekduomai] in the Greek is found in: Colossians 3:9 where he states that believers "...  have put off  (spoiled) the old man with his deeds;"  How are you dressed for the parade ... spoiled or saintly?  The "bruise" at Calvary was final regarding death, but one more awaits the devil at the last Armageddon, where: "... the GOD of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly."  Stand fast dear saint, the spectacle of Satan's demise which began on the outskirts of Jerusalem a couple of thousand years ago is still in progress.  In the meantime, reach out into the crowd and share your garments of righteousness, which CHRIST gave you, with others yet spoiled in their sin.

"And the armies which were in heaven followed HIM upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean."

"There is no reason for Christians to doubt the credibility of these Books (of the Bible) ... And it can never be proved, or made credible, that after CHRIST'S time the Scripture should be corrupted in anything of moment, if we consider how far and wide the Jewish nation, who everywhere kept these Books, was dispersed over the whole world."
