Boaster Club

June 11

"In GOD we boast all the day long, and praise THY NAME for ever. Selah."  Psalm 44:8

"... for all who love a winner, there is GOD!"

Let the world have its booster clubs, Christians are redeemed to be HIS boaster club ... and of all the great boasters found in Scripture, none compare with David, that sweet psalmist of Israel.  Perhaps it is just a man thing, but his encounter with Goliath was arguably his finest hour and highest boast of the GOD he loved.  "Then said David to the Philistine, thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the NAME of the LORD of hosts, the GOD of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.  This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a GOD in Israel.  And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's, and HE will give you into our hands."  Bring a person to the valley of imminent peril, and you'll discover who their boast is in; and in discovering that, you'll quickly discover their god as well.  At the risk of ruining many a great Sunday School lesson, 1 Samuel 17 would be better posed as the account of GOD and Goliath; and this is certainly the testimony of the man who would have none of the glory, were he here to teach it.  "David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, HE will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine ..."

The fiercest of all the faithful in the Bible, consistently deferred any glory they received to the ONE, WHO alone deserved it.  The truly victorious know that GOD doesn't simply 'have their back'; HE has their front, flank, perimeter, and circumference.  Misguided praise, either toward, or from you, in time, will turn to the curse of your nativity when "for ever" dawns upon you ... "Selah" ... but for all who love a winner, there is GOD!

How many Bibles bear your autograph?  How large is the trophy case of your mind?  If you wore a mic for the next 24 hours, what would the tape reveal regarding your boast ... your god (GOD)?

"My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: ..."

(English philosopher)
"Human laws are measures in respect of men whose actions they must direct, albeit such measures they are as have also their higher rules to be measured by, which rules are two, the Law of GOD, and the Law of Nature; so that Laws Human must be made according to the general Laws of Nature, and without contradiction to any positive Law of Scripture, otherwise they are ill made."

(The Second Treatise on Civil Government, 1690)
