Maternal Instincts

"... the prophecy that his mother taught him."  Proverbs 31:1

"Mothers provide an umbilical of understanding that doesn't end ..."

Where would we be without Mom ... may sound rhetorical; but if they are to be rightly appreciated, it bears pondering.  Not much is revealed personally about King Lemuel's mother from this chapter; however, the treasure trove of instruction given here to her son, speaks well of her character.  Herein she educates Lemuel of: women, substance abuse, the importance of compassion, justice, and marriage.  If the ensuing verses from Proverbs 31 comprise the testimony of the "virtuous woman" he married, "the prophecy that his mother taught him" served him well indeed.

Mothers provide an umbilical of understanding that doesn't end at our adulthood.  Could there ever be a closer tie with any other, this side of Heaven?  Even when we leave mom to cleave to the mate GOD gives, that cord of tender connection is still intact.  Men of achievement most often credit mom with their prowess in life; and dying soldiers on the field of battle invariably ask for mom with their final breaths.  Moms are the genesis of who we are, and the womb of all subsequent growth and development.

"I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also."  The success of Timothy, one of Paul's most trusted protégés, was traced to his mother.  Solomon would have never been the King of Israel, had his mother not went to David to intercede for his right to the throne (cf. 1 Kings 1:10-40).  And of heart rending charity, is the scene at Calvary, where JESUS last gasps are spent ensuring the welfare of Mary.  "When JESUS therefore saw HIS mother, and the disciple standing by, whom HE loved, HE saith unto HIS mother, woman, behold thy son!  Then saith HE to the disciple, behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home."

GOD could not have made a more perfect creature to incubate and nurture a life, than when HE made mom.  Truly, one day in May, is inadequate to offer thanks, both to & for her.

"Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies."
