Love's Legitimacy

July 30

"... this is the first commandment."  Mark 12:30

"If first things are not ordered first, they can fast become last."

Indeed, there can be no higher priority than to love GOD!  With that as a premise of all life and living, are there detectable ways to calculate, objectively, whether one really loves the LORD, or is it by verbal affirmation only?  "... let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth."  The saying that 'talk is cheap' is definitely a Biblical principle, though not stated so verbatim.  Some offer only the toothy form, while still others aspire to know, serve, walk with, or even witness for HIM, without ever coming to truly love HIM.  If first things are not ordered first, they can fast become last.  What are the indicators then, of legitimate love for GOD? Though not exhaustive, below is a good Biblical yardstick, whereby to gauge this critical, life sustaining element in you:

I. "JESUS said unto them, If GOD were your FATHER, ye would love ME: ..."
To love GOD is to know HIM, personally.

II. "If ye love ME, keep MY commandments.
To love GOD is to obey HIM, emphatically.

III. "Ye that love the LORD, hate evil: ..."
To love GOD is to hate sin, intensely.

IV. "And thou shalt love the LORD thy GOD with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength:"
To love GOD is to be devoted to HIM, passionately.

V. "He that loveth father or mother more than ME is not worthy of ME: and he that loveth son or daughter more than ME is not worthy of ME."
To love GOD is to love HIM, singularly.

VI. "By this we know that we love the children of GOD, when we love GOD,"
To love GOD is to love those  HE loves, extensively.

VII. "So when they had dined, JESUS saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou ME more than these? He saith unto HIM, Yea, LORD; THOU knowest that I love THEE."
To love GOD is to hold HIS priorities, honestly.

VIII. "We love HIM, because HE first loved us."
To love GOD is to acknowledge its reciprocal nature, appreciatively.

IX. "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love GOD, to them who are the called according to HIS purpose."
To love GOD is to trust HIM, faithfully.

X. "If any man love not the LORD JESUS CHRIST, let him be Anathema ..."
To love GOD is to be free from the curse of sin's Hell, eternally.

Let's call these the 'X' Commandments of True Love ... how do you measure up?

"He that saith, I know HIM, and keepeth not HIS commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in HIM.  But whoso keepeth HIS word, in HIM verily is the love of GOD perfected: hereby know we that we are in HIM."

"Religion and liberty are the meat and the drink of the body politic.  Withdraw one of them and it languishes, consumes, and dies ... Without religion we may possibly retain the freedom of savages, bears, and wolves, but not the freedom of New England.  "
