Aquatic Anxieties

"When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee ..."  Isaiah 43:2

"And albeit of an anxious comfort, is the knowledge that Jonah's whale still swims ..."

To those enrolled in the SAVIOR'S swim class, the Bible speaks of: "when" ... you pass through, not if you pass through, when it comes to the waters.  Cradle to grave comprise the duration of opportunity, and those who won't swim, will sink.  Nobody is thrown in, but once saved, the rising tide of the Christian life soon sweeps you out to the deep waters of faith.  "Afterward he brought me again unto the door of the house; and, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold ... And when the man that had the line in his hand went forth eastward, he measured a thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the waters were to the ankles.  Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through the waters; the waters were to the knees. Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through; the waters were to the loins.  Afterward he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not pass over: for the waters were risen, waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed over."  The 'unable to touch bottom' sense we have is by design; with the drowning feeling of a child encountered only as long as our eyes are off the LIFEGUARD.  "And Peter answered HIM and said, LORD, if it be THOU, bid me come unto THEE on the water.  And HE said, come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to JESUS.  But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, LORD, save me."

Beware however, the seven seas of this world are fraught with creatures of every sort intent on your third time under.  Sharks of sensuality lurk in the warm waters off Sin's coast; and in the shallows, are the reefs of religion, to suffer shipwreck upon every soul making for shore on their own.  And albeit of an anxious comfort, is the knowledge that Jonah's whale still swims after the backstroking believer who has strayed too far from the INSTRUCTOR.  "Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved."  Be still, the LORD has not promised smooth sailing with calm seas and gorgeous sunsets; but HE has committed to never leave us nor forsake us, till we arrive safely at the Port of HIS PRECIOUS SON.

"And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land."

"I cannot too greatly emphasize the importance and value of Bible study -- more important than ever before in these days of uncertainties, when men and women are apt to decide questions from the standpoint of expediency rather than of the eternal principles laid down by GOD, HIMSELF."
