Chords for the Chorus

July 14

"But GOD forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our LORD JESUS CHRIST, by WHOM the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world."  Galatians 6:14

"What vice has HE committed worthy of such venom?"

Contempt is an ugly sin in the courts of men; but when sinners are contemptuous toward their nail pierced SAVIOR, it befuddles the mind.  What vice has HE committed worthy of such venom?  Was Calvary a crime deserving the disdain, of the very depraved HE died to save?  The eternal answer is no; but the tap root of man's pride runs to Hell itself, finding its greatest release in the fault line of his mouth.  "And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell."  If boasting is to be taboo to the Born Again, it will have to be so in GOD'S power.

"Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before GOD."  The Word of GOD is the key to lock every jaw; the cross of CHRIST provided to open it anew in wonder of such love.  "But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for CHRIST.  Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of CHRIST JESUS my LORD: ..."  All who have ever entered into faith, and viewed HIS tree, HIS tomb, and HIS throne, will be known by their vocabulary.  "Give unto the LORD the glory due unto HIS NAME; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness."  Go ahead, tune up those vocal chords now for their intended use in that glorious chorus above!  Attend to your own dirge, and focus afresh, every affection upon: "those things which are above, where CHRIST sitteth on the right hand of GOD ... When CHRIST, WHO is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with HIM in glory.

"Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith."

For Love of Country
Charles Grandison Finney  (1792-1875)
(Revivalist, President of Oberlin College)
"The Church must take right ground in regards to politics ... GOD cannot sustain this free and blessed country, which we love and pray for, unless the Church will take right ground.  Politics are a part of a religion in such a country as this, and Christians must do their duty to their country as a part of their duty to GOD ... GOD will bless or curse this nation according to the course Christians take in politics."
