The Preservation of Life

January 6

“And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our GOD, for our good always, that HE might preserve us alive …”  Deuteronomy 6:24

“In the end however, his goods turn out to be the proverbial 'wooden nickel' ...”

There is a profound inversion of logic in these words of Moses designed to appeal to men where they are.  Since Eden, life has been cheapened by sin, but it is still our most precious commodity; and though that all sounds too shallow to be deep, life is unquestionably the quintessence of who we are, and what we are about.  Working further in reverse we note that good is the guarantee that GOD assures.  If polled, only the deranged would choose bad always, over its opposite.  No, even the irreligious and unspiritual would take personal good, if allowed to, and given the choice.  Although GOD doesn’t bundle things with strings attached in the attempt to somehow entice us to HIS side, the goodness HE gives is inextricably tied to a reverential trembling toward HIS person.  “If ye love ME, keep MY commandments.”  Lastly, all of this inside out reasoning leads us back to our genesis … i.e.; will we obey GOD or not?  The purpose of the statutes of Scripture is to reveal to us the rift of unrighteousness which rebellion toward Heaven has caused; and in turn, to nurture a healthy fear of the LORD.  “Or despisest thou the riches of HIS goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of GOD leadeth thee to repentance?”  If genuine, that humble awe spawns with obedience, and the goodness of GOD unto life eternal is birthed to bring another stillborn sinner to sainthood.

“Again, the devil taketh HIM up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth HIM all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; and saith unto HIM, all these things will I give THEE, if THOU wilt fall down and worship me.”  Juxtaposed alongside the simply profound course of GOD to attain that which matters most to us, are the insidious ways of Satan; which advertise the line of good as well.  In the end however, his goods turn out to be the proverbial ‘wooden nickel’ on a scale tragic enough to deliver total loss rather than eternal life.  Don’t be so naïve as to think that the Devil’s offer to CHRIST was exclusive to HIM, or for a limited time only.  A close look will reveal the stringer of his catch is flush with the fools who would take his bait to have it all while holding onto their sin.

“And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear ME for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them:”

"The criminal is the product of spiritual starvation.  Someone failed miserably to bring him to know GOD, love HIM and serve HIM."
