Duty Bound

January 16

“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear GOD, and keep HIS commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”  Ecclesiastes 12:13

“… true fear of GOD is always proven in obedience to GOD.”

What an amazing thought, that the entirety of Holy Writ can be distilled into these two admonitions.  How manifold are the scholars though, who seek the deep things of GOD and never once dip their spiritual toes into the tide of HIS grace!  To the depths they plunge dark and cold, and all the while the warm waves of HIS presence roll in at their feet.  “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments …”  The old ship of grace is christened: ‘Fear This’ … and wisdom, with understanding, the wind in your sails to take you out where HIS blessing and delight await you. “Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in HIS commandments.”   Don’t get caught up though with those moored in port and taking on water.  Hoist the main sail of the MASTER and launch out!  “Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD …”  Remember, if you will go deep for GOD, the vision of the journey belongs to us; the provision to arrive where HE beckons belongs to HIM.

From our fall in Eden, the LORD has invested in our remediation through HIS inspired and preserved Word.  To each who will humble themselves, and confess their depravity; they will discover the investment of HIS SON’S precious blood able to repatriate their fallen, sin bent soul as well.  The evidence of creation is too substantial for the Devil to persuade most folks to deny CHRIST outright; but he is extremely effective in convincing men that they can always make their peace with GOD tomorrow.  Even in the face of this evidence, there is a growing and pervasive attitude of: ‘let’s just wait and see’ … that ‘whatever’ spirit, bred of Satan to damn men’s souls.

“… now I know that thou fearest GOD, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from ME.”  If there is ever a case for man ruining a good thing, it is no more pronounced than taking the grace that is free, and cheapening it.  The fast and loose religionists today want their faith and sin too; but true fear of GOD is always proven in obedience to GOD.  “Thou believest that there is one GOD; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.”  Watch out, you who go to your grave, having placed your stock in your monotheism; for even the demons go one better than that.  Sober up spiritually, for the conclusion of the whole matter will soon meet you where the conclusion of your brief life intersects the door of your eternity.

“But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.”

For Love of Country
Daniel Webster (1782-1852)
(American politician and diplomat)
"If there is anything in my thoughts or style to commend, the credit is due to my parents for instilling in me an early love of the Scriptures.  If we abide by the principles taught in the Bible, our country will go on prospering and to prosper; but if we and our posterity neglect its instructions and authority, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity."
