The Reward of the Reaper

December 29

“Be ye ashamed, O ye husbandmen … because the harvest of the field has perished.”  Joel 1:11

“The work is 24 x 7 x 365 out here on the farm of faith”

To have a crop taken by disease, blight, or disaster is one thing; but to have it waste away through neglect is disgraceful.  “I have planted, Apollos watered; but GOD gave the increase.”  Each believer has been entrusted with some facet of farm work for the Kingdom; and while the ultimate success is in GOD’S care, HE chooses to partner with us to make it happen.  “While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest … shall not cease.”  There are seeds to sow, fields to irrigate, resources to manage, an ongoing harvest, and critters of HIS creation to care for.  On top of all this, there are regular visits of pestilence, every conceivable supernatural disaster, and the perpetual risk of seedling sabotage by Satan to guard against.  “Another parable put HE forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.”  The work is 24 x 7 x 365 out here on the farm of faith; and even the slightest degree of remiss holds the potential for crop failure.  As it pertains to the harvest of men’s souls, consider the following reasons which GOD suggests as to why they perish:

  • Reason # 1 ~ The laborers are ill perceptive: “Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.”     “… he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.”

  • Reason # 2 ~ The laborers are few: “Then saith HE unto HIS disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; pray ye therefore the LORD of the harvest, that HE will send forth labourers into HIS harvest.”

  • Reason # 3 ~ The laborers are lazy: "I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; and, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down.”

Don’t expect the conditions to be ideal; nor should you expect the god of this age to aid or abet your effort to bring in the harvest. “Because the ground is chapt, for there was no rain in the earth, the plowmen were ashamed, they covered their heads.”  The LORD over all HIS field, calls us to be diligent, overcome adversity, and occupy till HE returns.  To do any less will be an occasion for immense shame!  The reward of the reaper is the rescue of the crop, and the pleasure of the OWNER.

“The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.”
