The Glory of That Story

December 24

“Saying, where is HE that is born KING of the Jews? For we have seen HIS star in the east, and are come to worship HIM.”   Matthew 2:2

“… would be wise men today, still willfully turn emotional fools, in full view of Bethlehem.”

To suggest that: ‘Wise men still seek HIM’ … is more than a clever slogan on a bumper sticker; it is the crux of your creation, and eternity.  I dare say though, that the masses this holiday season, will favor a fictitious fat man from the far north, far more than the CHRIST of Christmas.  The same parents who will spend hours shopping, and stand in line for a photo op on Santa’s lap, won’t find the time to take junior to church, or even read the glory of that story in their own home.  We piously begrudge that the world doesn’t acknowledge the ‘reason for the season’ like we do; yet we consistently out spend them per capita.  We have injected the ‘Holidays’ into the Index of Leading Economic Indicators through our reckless, self-centered consumption.  It is not the heathen who lubricate the economic engine of the North Pole’s sleigh.  Were it not for professing Christianity, Rudolph would have broken down along the route to your house years ago.  “When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young CHILD was.”  Had those first wise men of the East bought into our contemporary Christmas, would they not have missed the star entirely while held up at the checkout?  “I shall see HIM, but not now: I shall behold HIM, but not nigh:” And by the way, none of the modern day confusion over CHRIST’S birth and its significance is attributable to ignorance.  “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools …”  In spite of the miraculous and historical fact of the first advent, would be wise men today, still willfully turn emotional fools, in full view of Bethlehem.

"I JESUS have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the ROOT and the OFFSPRING of David, and the BRIGHT AND MORNING STAR.”  Look up, that same star which rose out of Jacob to shine in the East that first Christmas morning shines as bright as ever.  HIS glory is still the story, able to scatter the darkness of sin; and powerful enough to erase its ability to damn the human soul.  EMMANUEL, GOD with us, but born to die, and rise again … that is the reason for the season.

“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.  And, lo, the angel of the LORD came upon them, and the glory of the LORD shone round about them …”

For Love of Country
Herbert Clark Hoover (1874-1964)
(31st President of the United States)
"If those few thousand men endured that long winter of privation and suffering, humiliated by the despair of their countrymen, and deprived of support save their own indomitable will, yet held their countrymen to the faith, and by that holding held fast the freedom of America, what right have we to be of little faith?"

(Valley Forge, May 30, 1931)
