Ruts of Religion

December 18

“Concerning the works of men, by the word of THY lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer.”   Psalm 17:4

“Paths are the route of our predecessors …”

Paths are the route of our predecessors, those well worn ways of bygone pioneers.  They are an unavoidable part of life, and of death.  At any given moment, we are either on one, or idle beside it.  For the Christian, the trailhead of truth and salvation is Calvary.  It is titled for its NAMESAKE; and from there the marching orders of the faith are issued.  Regardless of the path we choose in life, each one will ultimately lead us somewhere.  “The paths of their way are turned aside; they go to nothing, and perish … So are the paths of all that forget GOD”  The difficulty is that there are many deceitful trail guides who have not only mismarked the paths; but are willing to lead us astray, and even perish with us.  “But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.”  At the end of our day, we’ll discover that there were really only two paths, just like the Bible says.

“THY word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”  Both paths come with an associated illumination; one brilliant and bright, the other more darksome with every step away from GOD.  Again, the danger is that although all paths don’t lead to Heaven, they are nevertheless marked like they do.  JESUS spoke plainly in dealing with this persistent confusion when HE exclaimed: “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the FATHER, but by ME.”  To any honest historian, it is an unequivocal fact that CHRIST lived, died, was buried, and on the third day, rose from the grave, to establish the path of redemption all the way home to Glory for those who will get on.  To any honest hiker, the difference between a rut of religion and the path of redemption must become equally apparent if he\she is to avoid that rut of “nothing”, “and perish” in Hell.

“Shew me THY ways, O LORD; teach me THY paths.”  In spite of all the intentional chaos surrounding this, the right path for time and eternity is before us and ours simply for the asking.  “In all thy ways acknowledge HIM, and HE shall direct thy paths.”  Follow in joy and humility, ours is not a light at the end of some proverbial tunnel; but a sure way relumed in the righteousness of JESUS CHRIST HIMSELF for every step of our way Home.

“Hold up my goings in THY paths, that my footsteps slip not.”
