Lions, and Giants, and Bears, Oh My

“The LORD hath delivered me ...”   1 Samuel 17:37

“… abiding in the rear of the faith ... is nothing to boast of.

Every Christian has a lion and bear story somewhere; but every Christian does not possess the courage to recall it, in that critical moment when Goliath comes a calling.  It is a wondrous thing to be delivered by the LORD; however, if you refuse to live out on the limb of faith, the delivering grace of GOD is rendered moot toward any future use.  The idea of deliverance implies that there are situations of peril to be delivered from.  “And David said … Is there not a cause?”  There can be no deliverance apart from the hardship of the Christian race; and there can be no courage minus a cause.  We have erred dear sibling of faith, making our cause Christianity; it is not! ... our cause is CHRIST!  “If after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantageth it me, if the dead rise not? Let us eat and drink; for to morrow we die.”  Does it not strike you as inspiring that the blood washed saints of GOD make no annual pilgrimage?  “In the day when I cried THOU answeredst me, and strengthenedst me with strength in my soul.”  Ours is rather the marching orders of a daily prayer closet from whence the decision to foray out into the hail of Hell’s bullets has to be made.  It is out there, on the battlefield, where deliverance takes place.  My dearly beloved, abiding in the rear of the faith, where the merriment of salvation drowns out its demands, is nothing to boast of.

“But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in GOD which raiseth the dead: WHO delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in WHOM we trust that HE will yet deliver us”  Have we forgotten the high price of which we're bought … the high calling of which we are sought?  Would be believers today though, are not interested in a salvation turned safari; but seek instead a petting zoo with abundant lighting, security, and every amenity at arm’s length.  “But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves.  Woe unto them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.”  Entire religious movements under the guise of Christianity are poking peanuts through chain link, while the guttural cries of the hell bound are muted in carnival music and atmosphere.  This may be vogue and contemporary; but it is not Biblical, and it is not ChristianWould, that the GOD of every Goliath’s demise, send us a fresh vision of the cause, and the courage to carry it out.

“Notwithstanding the LORD stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.  And the LORD shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto HIS heavenly kingdom: to WHOM be glory for ever and ever. Amen.”
