Character Assoc-ination

August 24

"He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed."  Proverbs 13:20

"It is then destined to a kind of sentimental schizophrenia ..."

These words from Solomon are very insightful, and very telling.  The former is character by association; the latter, the assassination of the former.

Our choice of friends is the most discriminating process we hold.  While "friend" and "companion" can be synonymous, it is not necessarily so, especially as defined in the Scripture.  Without fail, the friends we choose mirror who we are; and, for better or worse, who we'll become.  Not only do our attractions betray us; but soon the choices we make morph into a unity which models those we mirror.  Ultimately, who we choose to embrace, and subsequently follow, holds all the potential to make us or break us.  No one intentionally selects an un-friend to dwell in his inner circle, but pseudo-friends happen.  "Can two walk together, except they be agreed?"  In physics, opposites may attract; but there is no such magnetism in the physical, except when forced.  It is then destined to a kind of sentimental schizophrenia ... character assoc-ination!  "Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend."  GOD has designed true friendship to be made up solely of  positive charges.  Many a foolish young person, however, begins this process in his youth with little or no guidance, simply rolling with the flow, forsaking real friendship for comradery or popularity.  As a result, modern minded capitalists are enriching themselves in 'bipolar' diagnostics; and the regrettably vain, but correlative drug trade, in the simple attempt to reverse what a simple change of friends could accomplish.

If the Genesis of man is GOD, it must follow that friendship finds its origins there also.  "Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of MY FATHER I have made known unto you."  WHO better to hold as your best friend than HE WHO chose you to mirror HIM?  "Ye are MY friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you."  One of the best ways to prove yourself loyal to the best FRIEND man could ever know, is by yoking up with them who share the sentiment of the SAVIOR.

"I am a companion of all them that fear THEE, and of them that keep THY precepts."
