An Eternity of Uncertainty

August 16

"LORD, who shall abide in THY tabernacle? who shall dwell in THY holy hill?"   Psalms 15:1

"Dream on that you will one day abide in that place by some merit of yours ..."

The "who" of David's questions frame the crux of all of life's clinical conditions.  The thought of an eternity of uncertainty is the most maddening thing to man.  "abide, dwell" ... are terms of permanence and so foreign to eternal souls imprisoned in temporal earth suits of decay.  "O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?"  What utter hopelessness there is about us!  "Who can stand before HIS indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of HIS anger? HIS fury is poured out like fire ..."  The obvious reply to the rhetoric of the Psalmist is: none, no one, nobody, nada ... shall abide or dwell with GOD.

"Be ye therefore perfect, even as your FATHER which is in heaven is perfect."  'Well, nobody is perfect', flows so piously off our tongues, and indeed is true; but that is the exact demand for those "who" will abide in Heaven.  "For I say unto you, that except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven."  Every man's insurrection ride of self-righteousness will one day come to a screeching halt at Heaven's gate.  "And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the LAMB'S book of life."  The eternal journal of the redeemed holds the record of "who" shall enter.  If the Bible is to be believed, all "who" envision Peter with some Divine set of scales in his left hand, and a welcome sign in the right one, are in for the shock of their eternal lives (cf. Revelation 20).

The "who shall" is nobody, but the "whosoever shall" are as numerous as the few "who" will ultimately agree with GOD regarding their unworthy, and destitute condition apart from HIM.  "For whosoever shall call upon the NAME of the LORD shall be saved."  Dream on that you will one day abide in that place by some merit of yours; but apart from trusting in the finished work of CHRIST on Calvary, it is a pipe dream.  All are bidden of HIM to come, question is: "who" shall abide?

"And now, little children, abide in HIM; that, when HE shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before HIM at HIS coming."
