Peter and Pilate's Wife

April 8

"Be it far from THEE, LORD: this shall not be unto THEE.Matthew 16:22

"... men in empathy with their sin, seek to call the LORD down off the cross."

The "this" spoken of here by Peter toward CHRIST is the gospel; and those who view HIS cross with pity, have yet to truly see the cross.  Calvary was not some insidious stratagem of man perpetrated upon GOD'S SON.  That dark day was not wrath on HIS SON, but wrath on our sin; and all regret toward "this" is affinity with Satan.  "For this purpose the SON OF GOD was manifested, that HE might destroy the works of the devil."  The will of GOD was not usurped by the death of CHRIST, it was gloriously fulfilled.  "From that time forth began JESUS to shew unto HIS disciples, how that HE must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day."  On the day of crucifixion, when Pilate: "was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just MAN:"  That sympathy card too, was straight out of Hell; and how tragic that our world is presently glutted with the spiritual kin of Pilate's wife who have proudly determined in their sin, to have nothing to do with that just MAN.  "For CHRIST also hath once suffered for sins, the JUST for the unjust, that HE might bring us to GOD, ..."

"Then Peter took HIM, and began to rebuke HIM, ..."  Then as now, men in empathy with their sin, seek to call the LORD down off the cross.  "If THOU be the SON OF GOD, come down from the cross."  What a waste, they say ... recant, forsake this silly notion of who YOU claim to be, or that we are hopelessly lost without YOU!  "But HE turned, and said unto Peter, get thee behind ME, Satan: thou art an offence unto ME: for thou savourest not the things that be of GOD, but those that be of men."  The religious and heathen will forever look upon the cross with disdain; but GOD forbid the redeemed ever do so again.  Peter, we know, took another look at the cross and embraced HIM WHO hung there in his stead for sin.  Pilate's wife, however, presently perishes, having insisted on sparing the just MAN HIS destiny, and erecting in her mind, just two crosses at Golgotha.

What is "this" thing that you are preventing CHRIST in doing for you?

"CHRIST hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:"

"Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom.  As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters."
