Come and Dine

April 6

"... I have esteemed the words of HIS mouth more than my necessary food."  Job 23:12

"... when we consider what comes out of HIS mouth, more important than what goes in ours."

Though some have suggested it, the book of Job is not best viewed as a training manual on suffering.  The forty-two chapters which bear his name, do however, make up an excellent symposium on the sufficiency of GOD.  Learning how to suffer is the underbelly, but walking with GOD in the fire and not being burnt will draw the awe of all.

Isn't it true that nothing serves to tweak our spiritual triage like trials?  Our priorities, like Job's, are firmly in place when we consider what comes out of HIS mouth, more important than what goes in ours.  In our opulence, where even Christians live as though: "... GOD is their belly ..."; these words of Job are almost unintelligible.  Job would not fare well as a pulpit candidate in the American Church; for at high noon on Sunday, our esteem moves from Eternal to internal.  This preaching of Moses regarding Israel, smacks of dé·jà vu if we but replace Jeshurun with churches.  "But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he forsook GOD which made him, and lightly esteemed the ROCK of his salvation."

"O taste and see that the LORD is good: ... "
If you have ever eaten with the LORD, you are in good company, and nothing else will ever satisfy.  Jeremiah writes: "THY words were found, and I did eat them; and THY word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart:  David said: "the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether ... sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb."  Peter stated a young Christian should: "... desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:"  And JESUS claimed: "I have meat to eat that ye know not of ... MY meat is to do the will of HIM that sent ME, and to finish HIS work."

"Neither have I gone back from the commandment of HIS lips; ..." Job could have succumb to Satan's dainties and sought GOD to turn his boils to bread; but instead, this great old saint chose to reveal that CHRIST in a man, is as sufficient, as CHRIST as a MAN.

"Then was JESUS led up of the SPIRIT into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.  And when HE had fasted forty days and forty nights, HE was afterward an hungered.  And when the tempter came to HIM, he said, if THOU be the SON OF GOD, command that these stones be made bread.  But HE answered and said, It is written, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of GOD."

"You ... are placed by Providence in the post of honor, because it is the post of danger ... The eyes not only of North America and the whole British Empire, but of all Europe, are upon you.  Let us be, therefore, altogether solicitous that no disorderly behavior, nothing unbecoming our character as Americans, as citizens and Christians, be justly chargeable to us."
