The SPIRIT'S Sojourn

April 5

"Now then we are ambassadors for CHRIST ..."  2 Corinthians 5:20

"We fool ourselves and fail our LORD when we seek to be winsome and cease to be winning!"

    am·bas·sa·dor (àm-bàs¹e-der, -dôr´) noun

    1. A diplomatic official of the highest rank appointed and accredited as representative in residence.

    2. A diplomatic official heading his or her country's permanent mission.

3. An authorized messenger or representative.

  • Definition #1 applies, because the Scripture speaks to believers as those who: "... confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth ..." representing "... a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is GOD."

  • Definition #2 applies, because of the mission of the commission: "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the FATHER, and of the SON, and of the HOLY GHOST:"

  • Definition #3 applies, because of the power of our authorization: "But ye shall receive power, after that the HOLY GHOST is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto ME ..."

A prudent ambassador remembers he is an alien, a supernatural misfit, by virtue of being from another place.  "Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth ... your life is hid with CHRIST in GOD."  Many a once effective emissary has failed; having lost the love of his homeland, and sought asylum in the strange land he came to win.

The Christian is the offspring of the SPIRIT, who's birthplace is out of this world.  JESUS reminds HIS disciples of this vital truth just prior to the cross: "If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you."  We fool ourselves and fail our LORD when we seek to be winsome and cease to be winning!  "A wicked messenger falleth into mischief: but a faithful ambassador is health."  The world we are sent to as ambassadors is entrenched in rebellion toward GOD; if won, it will have to be conquered (cf. Romans 8:37) in the power of HIS might  ... and that availed only of the loyal.

"To wit, that GOD was in CHRIST, reconciling the world unto HIMSELF, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation ... Now then we are ..."  The question is not whether we are ambassadors, but rather, what manner of ambassadors will we be?  Take the office of ambassador to heart, then take that heart to the lost in sin bearing HIS terms of peace.

"we pray you in CHRIST'S stead, be ye reconciled to GOD."

For Love of Country
Continental Congress (September 7, 1774)
(prayer offered by Reverend Jacob Duche')
"Be THOU present O GOD of Wisdom and direct the counsel of this Honorable Assembly; enable them to settle all things on the best and surest foundations; that the scene of blood may be speedily closed; that Harmony and Peace may be effectually restored, and the Truth and Justice, religion and Piety, prevail and flourish among the people."
