Truce of Consequences

April 17

"... the enemy of GOD."  James 4:4

"... a POW camp ... doubled as a guerilla outpost at eternal war with Heaven."

I find few who don't bristle when the Bible implies that they are "the enemy of GOD".  Being born in sin, to sin, and encompassed by sin; it is somehow absurd to us that GOD is angered with sin ... but HE is: "GOD is angry with the wicked every day."  Due to the past victories which evil won over our ancestors (cf. Genesis 3:15), we were birthed into a POW camp.  For those who refuse to escape, they will discover at death that it doubled as a guerilla outpost at eternal war with Heaven.

Polls, in our world today, suggest overwhelmingly that most are not opposed to the notion of a god.  Inject the picture of a bloody SAVIOR however, and the numbers drop rapidly: "For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of CHRIST:"  Mention the fact that there is only ONE true and living GOD, JESUS CHRIST, and that HE is LORD; insistent on their allegiance and obedience, and the masses gird up.  Let them know they are damned forever in Hell apart from their personal, wholehearted repentance and faith toward these facts, and the distinction of friend and foe becomes stark and apparent.  "But those MINE enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before ME."

The carnal man is wholly uninterested in the terms of peace as outlined in Scripture.  "Because the carnal mind is enmity against GOD: for it is not subject to the law of GOD ...".  He instead sues for a truce, seeking to spare sin as his comrade in arms.  The religions of the world negotiate for a god in their image; which is tolerant of every conceivable sin, because it was conceived in a heart of enmity against Heaven.  The GOD of the Bible, however, calls men to lay down their arms, and Cross the battlefield to the table of true peace.  "And, having made peace through the blood of HIS cross ... you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath HE reconciled". Those who shun peace in place of truce, will one day encounter to their eternal chagrin, that their truce has consequences.  David declared: "GOD shall wound the head of HIS enemies ... such an one as goeth on still in HIS trespasses."  And Isaiah tells us: "... HE shall prevail against HIS enemies."

For these thousands of years, those of us who do escape across the Cross, have reached back to pull others through the bars of sin; and when railed upon for daring our commission, we must ask with Paul:

"Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?"

For Love of Country
Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)
(Civil War President of the North)
"I pray that our Heavenly FATHER may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom."

(November 21, 1864, to Lydia Bixby of Boston, who lost five sons in the war)
