Storm Students

April 16

"HE maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still."   Psalm 107:29

"... Ever try to board up a boat?"

That which causes man to board up and hunker down, gives occasion to the glory of GOD.  HE defies the natural in supernatural ways: "The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up ...".  Storms, by definition, are not supposed to be calm; they're meant to display the awesome.  Waves are not intended to lie still, they're made to roar; and such also is the way with GOD, "WHO ... calleth those things which be not as though they were."  HIS ways are not natural; they frighten and confound those who flee inland when the clouds gather.  "And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, what manner of MAN is this, that even the wind and the sea obey HIM?"  HE defies the forecasters and even the mightiest of seas bow at HIS voice!

"For HE commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof ... stormy wind fulfilling HIS word:"  In the storm, it is of great comfort to remind ourselves that HE is the LORD of nature.  It is of further worth to be aware that no storm exists outside HIS genesis, and knowledge of it.  If you'll recall, the disciples had an object lesson or two of faith while out on the Sea of Galilee regarding this very thing.  "And there arose a great storm of wind, ... and they awake HIM, and say unto HIM, MASTER, carest THOU not that we perish?"  Thunder, but especially lightning, has a photoelectric effect on the fear factor of our soul; thus these storm students woke the LORD, not seeking help, but to say goodbye! ... Ever try to board up a boat?

"So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging."  In any discussion of soul storms however, it must be recognized that some are as natural as sin.  The laboratory of the heart can carry the wicked life to an Oz of epic low pressure.  But whether your storm be of Divine origin or of dumb, rest assured that the MASTER of the wind, has an intended end, to accomplish HIS purpose in you.  Turn your vessel into the gale of HIS grace and light up the flight deck, that this trial might take wings for HIS glory.

"Then are they glad because they be quiet; so HE bringeth them unto their desired haven."

(Congregational minister of the West Church of Boston)
"Civil tyranny is usually small at the beginning, like the drop of a bucket, till at length, like a mighty torrent, or the raging waves of the sea, it bears down all before it, and deluges whole countries and empires ..."

(House of Representatives in Colonial New England, 1749, in response to England's plan to impose the Episcopal Church as America's State Church)
