Revival: Day Three

... thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam"   Revelation 2:14

Believers at Pergamos were engaged in the ‘meet-um ½ half-way' approach to the Christian life.  This effort to market a holy GOD to an unholy world is sadly extant unto our day, and is still just as absurd.

Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?  And what concord hath CHRIST with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?"  2 Corinthians 6:14-15

Balaam got into the yoke with Balak in the tragic attempt to please both man and GOD.   The result was a people who embraced impure doctrine which led to impure lives.  A bad god will always lead to bad morals! (Romans 1:18-32)  If there is one word to sum up Balaam's life, it is: 'compromiser'.  If there is one word to sum up most of what calls itself Christianity in our time, it is: 'compromised'.  Doctrine is viewed as narrow, antiquated, and even irrelevant.  Whole denominations have compromised on such basic teachings as: the virgin birth of CHRIST; the Person and work of CHRIST and HIS atoning blood; modesty; the roles of men and women; heterosexual marriage; the sanctity of life; and a host of other black and white doctrinal issues from the Word of GOD.  Natural men and backslidden religionists will always applaud compromise because of the soothing effect it has on their conscience.  GOD however, is displeased by compromise and promises to the church in Pergamos that HE: "will fight against them [and surely us] with the sword of MY mouth"  Revelation 2:16.  The "sword" is the Word of GOD and the absence of clear doctrine today is at the precise root of all the compromise.

Some of the strongest language in Scripture is given to protect and keep doctrine pure:

"Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.  For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our GOD into lasciviousness, and denying the only LORD GOD, and our LORD JESUS CHRIST."  Jude 3-4

"For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that JESUS CHRIST is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.  Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.  Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of CHRIST, hath not GOD. He that abideth in the doctrine of CHRIST, he hath both the FATHER and the SON.  If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him GOD speed:  For he that biddeth him GOD speed is partaker of his evil deeds."  2 John 7-11

But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.  But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;  And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in CHRIST JESUS.
Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;  And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables."
2 Timothy 3:13-15; 4:2-4

While it is commendable that many in Pergamos stood fast, even those who were standing tolerated those who weren’t.  This 'user friendly' mindset which dilutes doctrine in the attempt to make it palatable to sinners must be repented of if revival is to come.

I beseech ye therefore brethren by the mercies of GOD that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice ..."  Romans 12:1

Pergamos needed a revived paradigm based upon GOD'S Word.  If we foolishly neglect this, we must expect GOD our foe.  What a sobering thought to look across the arena and find GOD arrayed for war advancing toward us!

Revival Question # 3: Whom is your doctrine from?

Day Three of revival begins with a fresh embrace of sound doctrine.

Memorize: "Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee."  1 Timothy 4:16
